Choosing a jacket for the in-between seasons

Spring and autumn both swing several degrees within a single day, which is why most people keep two jackets by the door. A lightweight jacket covers September and April. October and November call for insulation or an extra layer underneath.

Start with how you use the jacket. If you move a lot, breathability matters more than warmth. If you stand still in the cold, warmth decides, and a parka beats a thin shell.

A longer jacket covers your hips and thighs and keeps you dry when rain comes in at an angle. It suits commuting and everyday wear. Shorter cuts sit better on a bike, since they do not bunch at the waist when you sit down.
