Expeditions in crisp winter weather, everyday occasions or a practical transitional jacket between seasons? Whatever the case, the down jacket is a great and multifunctional choice! There is no material on the market that can match the properties of down. The optimum warmth, low weight and high comfort are everything.
What types of down jackets are there? And how do you actually wash a down jacket properly? Here we guide you through the different types of jackets and the amazing properties of down.
Down jackets come in thinner, thick and extra-thick varieties for different weather and activities. There are also different models, such as down jackets and down vests.
THIN DOWN JACKETS
A versatile garment that can be worn in all seasons; as an extra warming layer on the coldest winter day to a top layer on a chilly summer evening.
Depending on the activity you are facing, you can think about how to wear this down jacket with other garments. If you are facing high activity with short breaks, you should wear a shell garment under the down jacket. For quieter activities where you require more insulation, you should instead wear the down jacket under a shell garment.
THICK DOWN JACKETS
A classic garment for the Scandinavian winter. A thicker down jacket that provides maximum warmth, is lightweight and easy to pack. Also a multifunctional variant that can be used both for everyday use and for activities.
EXTRA THICK DOWN JACKETS
A really heavy-duty garment designed for more demanding weather conditions and tough activities, such as expeditions. Such a garment will usually not be needed for everyday use, but is designed for extra tough occasions.
Down is a very special material when it comes to warmth, weight and comfort. It is a natural material that no synthetic material can really compare with yet.
The insulating properties of down are generally very good. But it varies from garment to garment how much air the garment lets in depending on how it has been sewn. If there are continuous seams, a warm down jacket can still let in air and cold where the seams are. A down jacket can also be made with a box construction, which means that there are intermediate walls between the inner and outer material, which in turn eliminates the penetration of wind and cold.
Although a down jacket can look very big and puffy, it weighs very little. It's also easy to pack up small, so it's easy to take in your backpack in case you need the extra warmth during your activity.
Down jackets should be machine washed as little as possible, but of course it can be done. However, there are a few steps to remember to try before choosing to machine wash.
VENTILATE
The down jacket's best friend - the vent. Hanging up and airing a down jacket goes a long way. For example, when you have been out in the woods and sat in front of an open fire or grilled, a strong smell of smoke can settle in the jacket. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to wash it, in most cases it's enough to ventilate it for a while.
SPOT WASH
Have you got a nasty stain on your jacket? Then you can spot wash! Instead of throwing the whole jacket in the washing machine, treat the stain. You'll avoid the washing machine's impact on your jacket and still get it clean where it needs to be.
WASHING MACHINE AND TUMBLE DRYER
If your jacket is dirty or you just need to wash it, you can of course do that too. But to keep the good qualities of down, you need to pay attention to how you wash the garment.
Spot treat any stains first
Close all zips, buttons and Velcro
Turn the jacket inside out
Use mild detergent at 1/3 of the usual dose, avoid fabric softener
Do not fill the machine more than half full and wash on a gentle programme
Once you have washed the jacket, tumble dry it to regain the fluffy down feel.
Put the jacket in the tumble dryer along with some tennis balls, this will help to distribute the down.
After tumble drying, hang up and let air.
Vänd jackan ut och in
