Merino wool is a highly popular material for base layers and warm clothing — and it’s only growing in popularity. What makes merino wool special is that it’s incredibly fine and soft thanks to its thin, curly fibers, which also provide excellent breathability.
A wool base layer is perfect for really cold conditions because the material has excellent insulating properties. For example, if you’re going alpine skiing, a wool base layer is ideal — you’re active for a short time, then rest. One thing to keep in mind is that wool transports moisture less efficiently than synthetic materials, making it less suitable for high-intensity training. However, wool still keeps you warm even when it's wet, so getting a bit sweaty isn’t a problem.
Wool also has natural antibacterial properties, meaning it resists odors — so you don’t have to wash it as often. That’s a huge plus! Try to avoid washing the garment unless necessary — just hang it out to air after use.

So, what actually sets merino wool apart from regular wool? The key difference is in the fibers — merino wool has extra fine fibers that regular wool lacks. These curly fibers also create tiny air pockets, improving insulation and breathability. The incredibly soft feel you get from merino wool simply can’t be matched by regular wool. While traditional wool is warm, it can often feel itchy and rough, making it less ideal as a base layer — but great as a second layer.
Wool has a fantastic self-cleaning property, meaning you don’t have to wash it very often. Just air it out regularly — it does more than you might think!
When you do need to wash it, use a wool detergent. Hand washing is preferred, but a gentle cycle at 30°C (86°F) also works well. If your washing machine has a wool program — use it!
One important tip: don’t soak wool and never wring it out — that damages the delicate fibers. After washing, hang it to dry immediately instead of leaving it in the machine.
