A kids' ski jacket has to survive a full day on the slopes and an afternoon on the sledding hill afterwards. Here you'll find ski jackets and snowboard jackets in junior sizes, from light shell jackets for active skiers to lined models for cold days on the lift. Filter by size, colour and brand to find the right one.
The difference is in the details that meet the snow. A ski jacket has a snow skirt — an elastic band at the waist that keeps powder out when your child falls — and a hood with room for a helmet. The cuffs tighten over gloves, and the seams are often taped so meltwater can't get through. An ordinary winter jacket keeps your child warm, but lets snow in on the lift and on the way down.
Two numbers are worth checking. The water column tells you how much wet weather the fabric holds off. Breathability decides whether your child ends up sweaty walking back up the hill with a sled. For children who mostly attend ski school, a lower water column goes a long way. For full days in wet snow, you want more.
A lined kids' ski jacket has the insulation built in and is the simplest choice for younger children, and for families who want a jacket that works straight away. A shell jacket for skiing is uninsulated and built up with layers underneath, which gives you more control over warmth.
The rule of thumb: younger children who stand still in the lift queue and play in the snow usually get more out of insulation. Older children and juniors who ski actively all day tend to prefer a shell.
Children outgrow ski jackets faster than they wear them out. Many ski jackets have a growth system in the sleeves that folds out by one size, adding a season to the jacket's life. Don't size up too far, though — a jacket that hangs past the bottom lets snow in at the waist despite the snow skirt, and sleeves that cover the hand make it hard to grip the poles. Measure your child's height and work from that.
The ski jacket is the outer layer. Underneath it you need a base layer for kids next to the skin to move sweat away, and a mid layer in fleece or wool to hold the warmth. Three thin layers keep your child warmer than one thick one, and they can be adjusted to the weather — the mid layer comes off when the sun appears.
Pair it with ski pants for kids from the same system so everything meets properly at the waist.
Wash the jacket once the dirt starts to show. Dirt in the fabric hurts breathability more than most people expect. Use liquid detergent without fabric softener, and re-proof the jacket when water stops beading on the surface. A jacket that gets looked after stays dry considerably longer than one that never does.
