Women's winter jackets need to handle both a headwind commute and long days outdoors. Parkas are the longer style, covering the hips and often part of the thighs. They offer the most protection from wind and cold and are a safe choice if you're standing still for a while – at the bus stop, in the stands, at the dog park.
Down jackets give the most warmth per gram. They pack down small, weigh almost nothing and feel great when it's cold and dry. If they get wet, the down loses some of its insulation, so a down jacket is happiest on the dry days of winter or under a shell.
A lined, padded jacket with synthetic insulation keeps you warm even when it gets damp. That makes it a good everyday jacket in a mild, damp winter climate where the temperature tends to hover around freezing.
Snowboard and ski jackets are built for movement on the slopes: a higher water column, taped seams, a snow skirt and often vents under the arms. If the jacket is only going to and from work, that's more technology than you need.
A winter jacket keeps you warm by trapping air in its insulation. The more fill, the warmer – but also the bulkier. Think through how you'll use the jacket before choosing a level: if you move around a lot, a thick jacket quickly gets too warm, while a thinner model with the right layers underneath works better.
Also look for an adjustable hood, cuffs at the wrists and a drawcord at the waist. These are the details that shut out draughts, and they make a bigger difference than a few hundred grams of extra fill.
A short style gives freedom of movement and works well when you're cycling or driving. A long style protects more but can feel restrictive. If you'll be wearing thick layers underneath – a wool jumper, fleece – it may be worth going up a size, or choosing a style with a slightly roomier fit.
