We guide you in choosing rainwear
When selecting rainwear, it’s important to consider what type of garment you need. Do you want a rain jacket and pants for intense activities or more sedentary use? Is waterproofness or freedom of movement your priority? We explain terms like water column, taped and welded seams, and 4-way stretch.
Water column measures how well a material resists water pressure, but a high water column doesn’t guarantee full waterproofness if the garment’s construction is poor (e.g., non-waterproof zippers or pockets).
Taped seams seal the needle holes made during stitching to prevent water leakage. Some rainwear has all seams taped, others only the critical ones.
Welded seams mean fabric pieces are melted together rather than sewn, creating completely waterproof joints without tape.
4-way stretch fabric can stretch in all directions, providing greater mobility and comfort, especially appreciated in activities like golf and kayaking.
Washing rainwear is best done by hand with mild detergent and a soft brush to protect the material and waterproof treatment. Waterproofing may need renewing with spray. After washing, heat drying can restore the garment’s water-repellent finish (DWR).
